Governor Rick Scott has announced that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved his November 9 request for a Disaster Declaration, in response to the Severe Storms and Flooding event of October 28 - 31 in Broward County. Affected residents and businesses can apply for low-interest disaster loans from the SBA. The declaration covers Broward County and the neighboring counties of Collier, Hendry, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach.
"I want to thank Administrator Mills, Director Skaggs and our federal partners at the SBA for their swift response to this event and for providing essential disaster assistance," said Governor Scott. "These low-interest loans are an invaluable resource that will assist our residents in recovering from the detrimental storms and flooding of late October."
Under this declaration, qualified residents may be eligible for home and/or business disaster loans to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate or property. Loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.
The SBA may increase a loan up to 20 percent of the total amount of disaster damage to real estate and/or leasehold improvements, as verified by SBA, to make improvements that lessen the risk of property damage by future disasters of the same kind.
For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and most private nonprofit organizations of all sizes, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. EIDL assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.
Interest rates are as low as 2.063 percent for homeowners and renters, 3 percent for non-profit organizations and 4 percent for businesses with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant's financial condition.
Individuals and businesses may obtain information on loan applications by calling the SBA's Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for deaf/hearing impaired) or by sending an e-mail to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Loan applications can also be downloaded from www.sba.gov.
Completed applications should be mailed to:
U.S.
Small Business Administration
Processing and Disbursement Center
14925 Kingsport Road
Fort Worth, TX 76155
Those affected by the disaster may also apply for disaster loans electronically from SBA's website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.
DEADLINES: The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is January 13, 2012. The deadline to return economic injury applications is August 14, 2012.

City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department Earns National Accreditation

The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department has earned national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The formal announcement was made at the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) 2011 Congress and Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia. The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department is one of only 104 agencies in the country to receive national accreditation, which confirms an agency’s commitment to quality and efficiency.
CAPRA recognizes park and recreation agencies for excellence in operation and service while providing assurance to the public that the agency meets national standards of best practice. CAPRA’s standards for national accreditation provide an authoritative assessment tool for park and recreation agencies. Through compliance with the standards of excellence, CAPRA accreditation assures that an agency has been independently evaluated against established benchmarks as delivering a high level of quality.
National accreditation is a rigorous and extensive process, which the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department has been working toward for two years. Accreditation is based on an agency’s compliance with the 144 standards for national accreditation. To achieve accreditation, an agency must comply with all 36 fundamental standards and at least 85 percent of the remaining 108 standards. The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department successfully met 142 standards.
CAPRA accreditation is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies. Accreditation is a five-year cycle that includes three phases: development of the agency self-assessment report, the on-site visitation, and the Commission’s review and decision. Within each of the four years between on-site visits, the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department must submit an annual report that addresses its continued compliance with the accreditation standards.
The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department serves the seventh largest city in Florida with a population of nearly 180,000. Blessed with over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and pleasant year-round ocean breezes, the agency offers premier opportunities for recreation, relaxation and enjoyment by providing a safe, superior environment and unique, quality programming for our diverse community.
For more information, please visit http://www.fortlauderdale.gov/life/news/2011/capra.htm.
The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies is a 13-member board composed of representatives from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, the National Recreation and Park Association, the International City/Council Management Association, the Council of State Executive Directors, the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation, the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials and the Armed Forces Recreation Society.
The Commission is administratively sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association, but acts with independence and under its own authority in determining accreditation standards and conferring accreditation of applicant agencies.
For more information, please visit the National Recreation and Parks Association website at www.nrpa.org.

Green Your Holiday Routine. Recycle Your Tree!
The City of Fort
Lauderdale is encouraging residents to recycle their holiday trees this season.
According to Earth911, approximately 30 million real Christmas trees are
purchased in the U.S. (www.earth911.com).
By recycling trees, residents can reduce garbage disposal costs and the amount
of waste going to the landfill.
The City makes holiday tree disposal easy by offering the eco-friendly options below:
1. Dispose of trees inside the green yard waste cart,
2. Leave trees out for bulk trash pick-up,
3. Take trees to one of the Broward County’s designated parks as part of the Chip Tree Program, or
4. Take trees to one of Broward County’s three Trash Transfer Stations.
Yard Waste Cart Disposal
If trees are placed in the yard waste cart, they must be cut into pieces so the lid can close completely. To reduce collection and disposal costs, the City strongly encourages residents to recycle trees using the yard waste cart.
Bulk Trash Disposal
Residents who choose to use the bulk trash pickup option are asked to leave trees next to the bulk pile. To properly recycle trees, remove all decorations, lights, tinsel, nails, tacks, tree stand or any other decorative materials.
For more information about holiday tree disposal in the City of Fort Lauderdale, please contact the City of Fort Lauderdale’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at 954.828.8000 or online at www.fortlauderdale.gov/customerservice.
Broward County Chip-A-Tree Program
Residents may take advantage of Broward County’s Chip-A-Tree Program by disposing of holiday trees at one of the County’s designated parks between December 26, 2011 and January 22, 2012. The collected trees will be chipped and used for landscaping throughout the County’s park system.
Chip-A-Tree Program Information and Guidelines

With proof of residency,** Broward County residents may dispose of household yard waste, including holiday trees, up to four times per month at no charge. The three drop-off locations, which are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays only, are:
1. North Station - 2780 N. Powerline Road in Pompano Beach
2. Central Station - 5490 Reese Road in Davie

** Proof of residency includes a current driver's license/photo ID with a utility bill (water, electricity, cable, telephone) and/or tax notice (name and address must match). Did You Know?
For each real Christmas tree harvested, up to three new seedlings are planted in its place, depending on farm size and current field rotation. Young trees in their rapid growth years have a high rate of photosynthesis and thus produce more oxygen than older trees.
The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Zen and Susan and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.
