Also present: President Craig Canning, George Counts

 1. President Craig Canning called the meeting to order at 7:36PM.

 2. BSO Deputy Joe Harris briefed those present about the recent burglaries in the Isles, saying that he thinks all involved are now in custody. The house on Key Largo Lane will soon be cleared of juveniles and either rented or boarded up while its owner spends some time at county expense. Some property has been recovered and an attempt will be made to return items to their owners at the appropriate time in the prosecution of the case. He went on to say that these things usually run in cycles and he thinks this cycle is about over. He admonished all present to make sure all door and windows are kept locked when no-one is home and that valuables and other tempting items are not left in the yard, driveway, or carport. Lock all cars, use alarms, and install motion-activated lights. Regarding stolen property, he mentioned www.propertyroom.com as a website at which one can register valuables for possible retrieval if stolen. All present agreed that President Craig Canning should write a letter to Chief Canfield thanking him and his deputies for their efforts on our behalf during this trying period. Terry Simonds asked deputy Harris if there was a way to set up e-mail communication between BSO and LICIA. Joe said he would check on it.

 3. Joan Sheridan brought up the CAP Initiative program, stating that it was an easy way for LICIA to get some cash for projects in our area. She passed out some flyers and asked those present to distribute on their lanes.

 4. Joan Sheridan announced that the triangle of property at the intersection of Davie Blvd. and US441, formerly Sluggo’s Sports Bar, has been purchased by the city of Ft. Lauderdale with funds from Pastor Cox’s Redevelopment Corporation. The property is slated to become a passive greenspace.

 5. Terry Simonds announced that there will be a workshop hosted by the Florida Dept. of Agriculture. It is scheduled for 10AM on 24 July 2001 at the main library downtown and will address the rule making for the cutting of uninfected trees within 1900 ft of an infected tree. Everyone is urged to attend.

 6. President Craig Canning reported on a recent airport meeting saying that the EPA is not happy with the plan to expand the south runway and that more data and studies will probably be necessary. The apparent intention is to shift more traffic to that runway in the future. Comments were made about the increased noise level or takeoffs in the past several months. Terry Simonds remarked that the wind had been westerly during that time. Elaine Peterick reported that several high levels of noise were recorded in June at our monitoring site, most of which were above the acceptable level. We were all urged to call the noise office to complain if appropriate.

 7. President Craig Canning reported that Broward County Environmental Engineering will construct sidewalks on the north and south sides of Riverland Rd. in June 2002. This will probably be after the drainage project, slated to run down Riverland Rd. from Gulfstream to the school, is complete. A sidewalk has been constructed on the south side of Riverland Rd. from Gulfstream to Whale Hbr.

 8. Joan Sheridan reported that the schedule for the completion of Riverland Woods has been set for March 2002. The schedule is identified as an “Estimated Optimistic Time Schedule.” She also mentioned that DOT has agreed to lease some property to the county so that the maneuvering of vehicles will be simplified by allowing sufficient area for turning.

 9. Joan Sheridan announced that the county Neighborhood Planning Dept. will provide signage showing where LIYTC is located. These signs were requested some two years ago. Also, $284 in the form of a credit to LICIA at a landscapers to buy plantings for whatever we want to do with them!

 10. George Counts announced that the abandoned steel tank has been pulled out of the river and is now on dry land. It’s still unsure who owns the tank, but it should be on its way out soon.

 11. Ann Guardino reported that she knows of no progress on the fence zoning violation at the NW corner of Andros and Riverland Rd. Hank still has the sign. Also, the NW Sugarloaf sign is being held for safekeeping by a Sugarloaf resident. Hank was requested to inventory all the signs.

 12. President Craig Canning brought up the subject of the annexation committee, saying that we need to get moving on this project. After discussion, it was MOVED and SECONDED that George Counts, Randy Dunlap, Pete Sheridan, Gary Starkweather, and Mark Olsen serve on the committee. Attempts should be made to include additional members who may be sympathetic towards Dania Beach. The motion PASSED.

 13. It was noted that Dania Beach proposes to raise taxes by some 17%, while the city of Ft. Lauderdale plans a tax increase of almost 10%.

 14. Joan Sheridan requested that President Craig Canning call the annexation committee together and start the ball rolling on the pre-annexation agreement document.

 15. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:26PM.

 Respectfully submitted, Terry Simonds, Secretary
