LAUDERDALE ISLES CIVIC IMPROVEMENT ASSOC., INC.
MINUTES (approved at 21 Aug 1997 General Meeting)
               General Meeting, 18 May 1995
The meeting was called to order by Pres. Gary Starkweather
at 7:40PM. Trustees present at the meeting were:
Gary Starkweather (GS) Terry Simonds (TS)
George Counts (GC) Harriet Hodgsen (HH)
Joan Sheridan (JS) Anthony Torti (AT)
Tony Spalding (Tsp) Neil Leibowitz (NL)
Betty Anne Campbell (BAC) Gary Olsen (GO)
Respectfully submitted, Terry Simonds, Secretary.
1. President GS recognized BSO Deputy Tony Wilson (TW). Tony
announced that BSO is planning to furnish him with a pager.
This is in addition to his personal pager, which he remarked
should be used for non-emergency calls to him personally. He
emphasized that emergency calls should be placed through 911
and non-emergency calls to 765-4321. He remarked that
several burglars were apprehended in the area. One will
probably receive a sentence of 15 years. A BSO deputy is now
on patrol on Riverland Road for about an hour a day to stop
trucks that are taking shorts cuts on Riverland Road. TW
remarked that there have been several alarms falsing in the
area. If a BSO Deputy arrives at the scene and finds the
house open, he will enter the premises, check it, secure the
premises, and leave a note on the door attesting to same. A
full report will also be made. He stressed that motion
detectors are the worst offenders. He further suggested that
anti-crime tips be included in the Newsletter.
The fact that a large tractor-trailer rig has been parked at
Riverland and 35th Street was passed to TW. He said he would
keep an eye on it. Isles residents are still being ticketed
for speeding on Riverland Road. Three motorcycle units in
District 5 are on duty in problem areas to watch for
speeders, failure to stop, etc. Several members brought to
TW's attention that trucks have been speeding on Nassau
Lane. He said he would personally take up a post on Nassau
in an attempt to catch the offenders.
2. Betty-Ann Campbell (BAC) presented the Treasurer's
report: she announced a starting balance of $5790.50 had
been increased by $700 through donations for an ending
balance of $6490.50. It was moved and seconded that her
report be accepted. The motion carried.
3. OLD BUSINESS-Committee Reports
Shopping Center--HH announced that she has been unable to
contact Mr. Bettencourt, the owner of the Pantry Pride
Shopping Center. She had called him and left a message that
LICIA would like to invite him to a meeting to discuss his
plans for the area. He had not returned her call by meeting
time. GC remarked that he and Bud Johnson had filed verbal
complaints with the City of Ft. Lauderdale regarding the
unsightly pile of trash on the east side of the property. It
was moved and seconded that a letter be sent to Mr.
Bettencourt by return-receipt-requested mail. Kitty Stack
suggested that the motion be amended to also invite the
owner of the property immediately to the North to a meeting
and express our concerns about its being an attractive
nuisance. The amendment and main motion carried.
Riverland Traffic--TSp reiterated the problems of getting
speed-control devices on Riverland Rd.
NEW BUSINESS
4. JS recapped the situation with the proposed retail site
plan behind the Riverland Store. She announced the receipt
of copies of three letters of support for the area to be
turned into a passive-use park. These letters are from Edith
Gooden, Principal of the New River Middle School; F.
Herhold, Executive Director of Marine Industries Association
of S. Florida; and R. Gross, Project Coordinator, 1000
Friends of Florida, Broward County Urban River Greenways
Coordinating Council. JS announced that permits for the
area's development had been extended 60 days and that we
must continue to push for Broward County to somehow acquire
the land. She suggested that residents call Commissioner
Cowman at 357-7004 to express their opinions on the area's
use.
5. GS commented on Deputy Wilson's remark about motion
detectors and false alarms saying that ghekos and other
small critters so common in this part of the country can
frequently trigger a motion detector.
6. GS reported that he had received a phone call from the
Florida Marine Patrol stating they had apprehended two
people stealing from boats in the area. Deputy Hagen
expressed a desire to address members regarding things to
watch for on the waterfront vis-a-vis crime prevention. It
was moved and seconded that he be invited to the 17 August
meeting. The motion carried.
7. GS called for volunteers to help with the newsletter.
Particular help is needed to write short articles.
8. JS announced that she had been informed by Carl Higgins,
Fla DOT, that bids are to be awarded on 24 May for the
planting along SR84, I595, and SR7.
9. GS opened the floor for a discussion of streetlights in
the Isles. He stated that much depends on the results of the
straw vote, a ballot for which was included in the May
Newsletter. He stressed that all residents return the
ballot; ballots can be faxed to 581-4743 if desired.
10. GC reported that the City of Hollywood wants to build a
composting facility some 6000 feet south of Lauderdale
Isles. It would handle about 8000 tons of garbage a month,
and would also serve as a recycling center. The City of
Dania is requesting an administrative hearing on the
subject; there has been no known response from Davie. It was
moved and seconded that LICIA send a letter to the Director,
Department of Natural Resource Protection, stating our
disapproval of the proposed project. The motion unanimously
carried.
11. Kitty Stack reported that trees near the Farm Store had
recently been cut. Apparently these trees were on the swale
and not on Farm Store property. The County may fine Farm
Store for unauthorized cutting. Kitty asked to be called on
her beeper at 779-8096 if anyone sees tree cutting in
progress.
12. Keith Kuhn(s) remarked that the entrance signs to the
Isles are outdated and in marginal repair. He will look into
replacing same.
13. The question of water quality was raised from the floor.
Several present remarked they had experienced discolored
water from their taps on several occasions. GC remarked that
he had attended a water-quality meeting at the Ft.
Lauderdale water works, and that he had the raw data on our
water. He would like someone to interpret those data. NS
mentioned that water samples can be sent to the Star Filter
Co. for testing. These units are available at Home Depot.
Tsp volunteered to chair a Water-Quality Committee.
Volunteering to help were George Counts and Manuel Montiero.

14. Kitty Stack remarked that she is willing to discuss the
Crime Watch program. She can be contacted at 587-2732; leave
a message.
15. A suggestion was made from the floor that we publish a
Lauderdale Isles Directory. GS stated that data on residents
and members are not yet available, but that names and
numbers of trustee's will be published in the August
Newsletter.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned
at 9:20PM
Respectfully submitted by Terry Simonds, Secretary.
