LICIA General Meeting
November 18th, 2004
Minutes
The meeting was called to order by President Craig Canning at 7:40PM. The first order of business was the presentation of a check for $500.00 to Jim Rhodes from the Broward Urban River Trails (BURT). The donation to BURT was approved by the general membership at the August meeting.
The next speaker was our Fort Lauderdale community policing representative Mike Dodson. All in all our crime statistics for the quarter were very good. There were 4 burglaries reported, mostly items that were taken from carports. There was a break-in where the perpetrators entered the home by removing several jalousie windows. Mike recommended that homeowners who still have the original jalousie windows on their homes strongly consider changing them. These homes are a target for thieves who know they can enter the home easily. Discussion started on the speed limits for Davie Blvd. and locating speed humps on the lanes.
The next speaker was Robert Wright from the Broward County Parks and Recreation Department. Bob is responsible for seeing that Riverland Woods Park actually gets built. He reported that the original contractor (BRC) has been fired by the County and the bonding company is now responsible for finishing Riverland Woods Park and 2 other projects. The good news is there is still $316,000 available to finish the Park and the fired contractor only received $175,000 for work that was done. Bob felt the bonding company was close to hiring a contractor to finish the work but work would not commence until January at the earliest. There are several items that must be approved by the County Commission before work can commence. There were multiple questions from the audience, many revolving around grant monies that were tied to the completion date of the park. Bob reiterated that the County is committed to completing the Park as designed and would do what ever it takes to make it happen, grants or no grants!
Our next speaker was Sheryl Dickey from Dickey Consulting, the PIO consultant on the Davie Blvd. Master Plan project. She gave an overview of the workshop that was conducted on Saturday 11/13. The workshop was divided into 2 parts with the public input taking place from 3pm to 6pm. She asked for our sign-in sheets so that all who attended our meeting will be invited to the workshop in January. Sheryl said the information that was handed out at the workshop should by available on the City of Fort Lauderdale’s web site in 2 weeks. Everyone was urged to review the materials before attending the January workshop. We will also try to put it on our www.licia.org web site if allowed.
Joan Sheridan followed with an overview of 2 projects, the new fire station on 27th Avenue and the new Publix on Davie Blvd. Both projects will demolish the existing structure and build new. Our firemen will be housed in a temporary structure and continue to serve our community while the Publix will be closed for approx. 7 months during construction. At this time it was also learned that a new recital hall designed similar to the Amaturo Theatre (Broward Center for the Performing Arts) will be constructed by St. Thomas Aquinas High School on property fronting Davie Blvd. The school has purchased and razed several residences to make way for the Hall. The building will be available for communities when not in use by St. Thomas.
